The last century ushered in two world wars, followed all too quickly by our involvement in both Korea and Vietnam. Against this backdrop of war and devastation, To Every Purpose Under Heaven follows the tragedies and triumphs of Brian Fitzgerald whose early loss of faith sends him on a journey of ultimate redemption.      Beginning at the start of the Great Depression, he rides the rails as a teenage hobo, struggling to find his identity and connecting with people along the way who will influence him profoundly.
After working hard to achieve his full potential in the civilian world, he goes on to fight bravely in the South Pacific during World War II. Still, he cannot resolve his anger at God for having allowed his mother to die from the ravages of the Spanish Flu and for the brutal murder of his father by corrupt cops and gangsters.
It is ultimately the power of forgiveness which brings reconciliation among all the characters in his life, and brings him to harmony with others and with God.
To Every Purpose Under Heaven is a must read for anyone who craves a better understanding of how historical events, politics, war, education, faith and family help shape our lives and create the futures we desire.
